Abstract

Purpose : This study was to examine awareness of the importance of a curriculum based on program outcomes in nursing students and graduates, their achievements, and the educational experiences of students and professors in an effort to determine what improvements should be made in the curriculum.

Methods : The quantitative data that were collected from 169 nursing seniors and graduates in a university located in a city about the importance of a curriculum based on program outcomes and their achievements were analyzed. And qualitative data were gathered by interviewing 13 people who were nursing seniors, graduates and professors in the same university, and the collected data were analyzed as well.

Results : The areas that the nursing students and graduates considered important were ¡°the performance of core fundamental nursing skills¡± and ¡°therapeutic communication,¡± and their achievements were low in ¡°the performance of core fundamental nursing skills¡± and ¡°the theoretical establishment of knowledge on liberal arts and the major field of study.¡±

Conclusion : To improve the achievements of the students the curriculum needs to be improved by gathering opinions from students, professors and industrial experts. In addition, the development of a curriculum that could link and integrate different areas of program outcomes is required.
